Hello Fellow members,

What is expected as an E-Club member?

Now you’ve joined, you’re probably wondering ‘what do I need to do in the club?’ We ask a few things of you as an E-Club member. As with all organisations, the more that you put in, the more that you will get out of Rotary. Here are key points to being an active e-club member Rotarian.

1. Pay all membership fees in a timely manner.

2. Contribute to our forums – Facebook is our major method of discussion in the place of a regular meeting. It is where we put up all information such as reports, project updates, upcoming events and general discussion. Posting on the forums is a way of acknowledging that you are keeping up to date with the information and you may find ways that you can assist members with projects through your knowledge or resources.

3. Complete a member profile – All members to provide a profile & photo for the website by sending to secretary@rotarygreatersydney.org to be placed on the website. Also fill in the ‘This is Me’ section of the forum.

4. Participate in the Monthly Online Meeting’s – Apologies accepted to be sent to secretary or president if you cannot attend. During meeting use online chat to submit questions of guest speakers

5. Contribute to project fundraising through sourcing donations – Fundraising helps our club to fund many projects every year. Become a centurion by donating $100 annually to Rotary to eradicate polio.

6. Attend E-Club events where possible – Each year the club tries to hold 3-4 major functions where we can meet face-to-face. These are a great opportunity to meet your fellow club members and a good chance for us to discuss all things related to the club.

7. Attend District Events – District events such as the Annual Changeover Dinner or District Conference are a chance to meet with Rotarians from other clubs and find out about Rotary on a larger scale. Our members have found that these events are really beneficial, especially for those who are new to Rotary.

8. Access the e-club induction manual or ask other members for assistance if you need information.

9. Go and visit other Rotary clubs in your local area – This is a great chance to find out about what is happening in your community and a great chance to share in fellowship with others. It’s also a chance to talk to people about the E-Club, as this is a new concept for a lot of Rotarians. Well worth the cost of a meal!

10. Respond to emails and club requests in a timely manner to assist with a smooth and efficient process

11. Board members to engage club members as volunteers in projects.

This Weeks Meeting

At This Week's Meeting our Speaker will be PP Val Bland.

Val grew up on a wheat and sheep property in Western Victoria. She came to Canberra to train as a Registered General Nurse, and followed soon after to train as a midwife.

Her husband was a technician, so she did an accounting course to attend to the bookkeeping. They have a son and a daughter, both of whom were overseas in 1993, Stuart working at a school for his 13th year, and Sharyn in Japan. Stuart speaks Mandarin, and Sharyn speaks Japanese. Both been to university and both have good jobs in the workforce. She has five grandchildren, two in Melbourne and three in Canberra. Val chose to do a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting with a major in law, and transferred to the public service, as shift worker with no family support was too difficult. Prior to university, she was a Toastmaster, and reached the level of competency. Following university, joined Rotary instead, attending all the District Conferences but has only been to the Sydney and Melbourne International conferences. She has mainly been Youth and International Director over time, due to heavy work demands, and has a Rotary RAWCS project in Nepal.  She has been a Rotary volunteer twice to northern Thailand, once to School of St Jude’s in Arusha, Tanzania, once on two tours around Nepal with another member’s project delivering educational resources to remote areas. She has been to the united Mission Hospital twice, once for 12 days with Professor David Croaker, a surgical specialist in Canberra, who volunteers his services at the hospital, and because of him and an Indian restaurant proprietor tapping me on the shoulder, the RAWCS project was thought of and eventually created.

Hope to see you all there.

Invitation From The Rotary E-Club Serving Humanity

Our guest on 23rd January will be Mahir Momand, the new leader of RAWCS. Your members might like to hear from him about his journey and his plans. As both of our clubs have a number of RAWCS projects, the talk will not be about RAWCS – except how it may change. We have invited Mahir to talk about himself, how he came to migrate here and his work as founding CEO of IIFC Group, founding CEO of Thrive Microfinance, Founder and CEO of Regional Opportunities Australia (ROA), Founder and Executive Director of HADIA Foundation, and most recently COO of IBA which is a digital neo-bank, the World Bank, United Nations and as a financial adviser to government.

Mahir Momand is a Microfinance expert who has lived 2/3 of his life as a refugee . He is the CEO of Thrive Refugee Enterprise, an organization established to provide microfinance and business support to refugees and asylum seekers in Australia to start new businesses and grow existing ones . Previously, Mahir served as CEO of the National Association of Credit Unions in Afghanistan, worked for the World Bank and UNHCR . The Microfinance programs run by Mahir have helped establish a total of 165,000 small and medium business enterprises in Afghanistan that provided a livelihood for nearly 1 million people.

Please let the President, John De Ridder, know if you would like to attend the 7.30pm zoom meeting on January 23rd, deridder@bigpond.com
